How Better Google Ads Structure Turned Clicks Into Leads

For manufacturers, Google Ads can be a powerful way to get in front of customers who are actively searching for your services. But simply spending more on ads doesn’t guarantee better results.

One manufacturing client came to Steel Mountain Marketing spending nearly $2,000 a month on Google Ads—but the campaigns weren't generating any measurable conversions.

The problem wasn't necessarily the budget. It was the structure.

The Challenge

Before working with Steel Mountain Marketing, the account had spent nearly $4,000 over two months and generated hundreds of clicks—but zero tracked conversions.

The campaigns were built around a broad, outdated structure, with branded and non-branded searches competing for the same budget. Keywords, ads, and landing pages also weren't closely aligned.

People were clicking, but the campaigns weren't effectively turning that traffic into leads.

Rebuilding the Campaigns

We rebuilt the Google Ads account with a more focused approach.

First, we separated Brand and Non-Brand Search campaigns so searches from people already familiar with the company weren't competing with opportunities to reach new customers.

Then, we created service-specific ad groups focused on areas such as:

- Laser Cutting
- Tube Bending
- Waterjet Cutting
- Production Welding
- Metal Fabrication

Each campaign was built around relevant keywords, ad copy, and landing pages. Instead of sending every visitor to the same generic page, users were directed to content that matched what they were actively searching for.

We also corrected conversion tracking so leads could actually be measured.

Once enough data was collected, the campaigns were transitioned from Maximize Clicks to Maximize Conversions, allowing Google to optimize toward users more likely to become leads.

The Results

The difference was significant.

In the four months following the restructure, the campaigns generated 66 tracked conversions, compared to zero in the two months before the rebuild.

By the fourth month:

- 24 tracked conversions
- 60% increase in conversions compared to the previous month
- 48% lower cost per conversion
- Conversion rate increased from 1.47% to 3.59%
- Monthly ad spend remained essentially flat

The biggest takeaway? The improvement wasn't simply from getting more traffic.

In fact, impressions and clicks decreased while a larger percentage of visitors converted into leads.

More Clicks Aren't Always the Answer

For manufacturers running Google Ads, the answer isn't always a bigger budget.

Sometimes, the biggest opportunity is making better use of the budget you're already spending.

Relevant keywords, focused campaigns, strong landing pages, accurate conversion tracking, and ongoing optimization can make a major difference in turning website traffic into actual opportunities.

Good marketing isn't just about getting more clicks. It's about getting the right people to take the next step.
